Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Updated: Oct 25, 2025

Philippians 3:14 NIV - “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

After my grandfather’s passing in June 2025, I began hearing stories that revealed even more about the man of God he was. I had always known him as “Gaga,” my grandfather — a man of God, loving, wise, and gentle. But others knew him as a faithful minister and true disciple.

People shared stories of how he prayed for them, counseled them, and helped guide their spiritual walk. Some of these stories even came from people I went to middle and high school with. Yet one memory, one phrase, stood out above the rest — something he would say to them often:

“Stay in your lane and stay focused.”

That phrase hit me differently, because it’s something every believer can live by. It applies no matter your gifts, your calling, or where you are in your walk with God.

In discipleship, staying in your lane and staying focused means being faithful to the specific assignment God has given you — without comparing, competing, or getting distracted by the pace or purpose of others.

Sometimes, we pay more attention to what God is doing around us than what He’s doing in us or through us. But as disciples, our vision should be fixed on Christ and what He has personally called us to do.

When Jesus called His disciples, He didn’t call them all to the same assignment.

Peter was bold and outspoken.

John was compassionate and relational.

Matthew was analytical and observant.

Each had a different role, yet all were essential to fulfilling God’s mission.

Trying to go where God hasn’t sent you can keep you from walking in the grace He has given you. Even when your intentions are good — “I just want to help” — stepping into an area outside your assignment can bring unnecessary warfare you weren’t meant to fight.

Your lane is where your grace flows. Staying focused means you honor God by staying obedient, even when distractions or detours come your way.

Always remember this: As my Gaga would say, “Stay in your lane and stay focused.”

Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you’ve allowed distractions or comparison to pull you off the path God set before you?

Action Step: Reflect on the specific areas God has called you to. Have you been faithful to that call, or have you drifted into someone else’s lane? Write down two or three things that have distracted you recently. Surrender them to God, and ask Him to help you realign with your divine purpose.

Prayer: Lord, help my focus to remain heavenward, not fixed on the things of this world. Teach me to use my gifts with intention and purpose — for Your glory, not my own. Give me wisdom to recognize when I’m veering off course and the strength to return to the path You’ve designed for me. Thank You for choosing me, growing me, and allowing me to be Your disciple — even in my imperfections. In Jesus' name, Amen.
